The custom cloud solution will be set up by SURF in collaboration with the research group requesting the service. Solutions are tailor made and adjusted to the problem at hand. The custom cloud solution will have the status of a Proof of Concept and could be the first step in developing a production service. This service is not meant to be a hosting service for an existing application.
SURF can deploy the custom cloud solutions using Kubernetes, Containers or Virtual Machines, on hardware that is hosted in the SURF data centre in Amsterdam. All service components are based on open source software and open standards.
Interested parties are invited to put forward one or more use cases, together with a description of their research to helpdesk@surfsara.nl.
MS4 is a flavor of Custom Cloud Solutions. Custom Cloud Solutions is a service that (as of 1-1-2020) that can be requested via NWO (large) or SURF directly (small).
MS4 provides services and consultancy to support the co-development and ultimately the operations of scientific custom solutions inside one or more Virtual Machines (VMs). New or existing tools and algorithms can be embedded into a tailored environment that takes care of all aspects required to mature it into a properly managed service.
The MS4 service offers co-development by means of support with implementing automation, deployment, monitoring and other forms of quality assurance, data handling, service management and other aspects relevant to scientific services that need continuous operation. In addition, MS4 offers sustainability by providing operations and hosting of these developed services at SURFsara premises.
Note that MS4 does not offer VMs as a service (for IaaS delivery we have other services), as all (pre-)production VMs are fully managed by SURFsara. For early development and PoC phases, the co-development team can acquire VMs from an IaaS provider (e.g. HPC Cloud).
